Ceramic - Expert Advice

M&M Flooring, Inc. carries a full line of ceramic and porcelain tiles from Shaw, Daltile, and Florida. Whether your looking for something traditional, rustic, or contemporary, our trained staff can help you select the appropriate tile and accents to meet your needs!

Some of the different types of tile we carry are:

  • Ceramic- are generally made from red or white clay fired in a kiln. They are almost always finished with a durable glaze which carries the color and pattern. These tiles are used in both wall tile and floor tile applications and are softer and easier to cut than porcelain.

  • Porcelain- are generally made by the dust pressed method from porcelain clays which result in a tile that is dense, impervious, fine grained and smooth, with a sharply formed face. Full body porcelain tiles carry the color and pattern through the entire thickness. Porcelain tiles are available in matte, unglazed, or a high polished finish.

  • Slate- is a natural material created from tremendous pressure deep in the earth over thousands of years. It comes in an array of colors from greens to pinks to blue-gray shades. It is a naturally slip resistant tile as well. Each tile has a subtle texture variation that will make each floor unique.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Will Ceramic tile chip and crack?

Prior to installation, ceramic tile is a very brittle product; but once it is installed, it becomes a permanent part of your construction. It will not chip or crack unless hit with a heavy object.

How durable is Ceramic tile?

If the right product is selected, installed, and maintained properly, it should last the lifetime of your home.

What is the difference between  glazed and unglazed tiles?

Glazed tiles are coated with a liquid glass which is then baked into the surface of the clay. The glazed provides an unlimited array of colors and designs as well as protects the color from staining. The unglazed tiles are pretty much the same as the glazed, except that their surface is not coated. Unglazed tiles do not show wear because their color extends throughout the tile, making them ideal for commercial applications.

Is Ceramic tile slippery?

Tile is about as slippery as vinyl or wood. Naturally, if the floor gets wet, any of these hard surfaced materials will become slippery. There are many tiles that have slip resistant surfaces but keep in mind, that the more abrasive the surface is, the more difficult it will be to maintain. You might consider using a mat in wet areas.

Should Ceramic tile be waxed?

Glazed tile should never be waxed. The purpose of the glaze is to give you a maintenance free floor. If you wax the glaze, all you are doing is creating more work for yourself.

Should a sealer be used on ceramic tile?

A glazed tile is already stain proof, so there is no purpose to putting on a sealer. You may put a penetrating sealer on your unglazed tile or your grout joints. The penetrating sealer is an invisible, stain resistant shield that is absorbed into the surface.

Is Ceramic tile cold on your feet?

Many people assume this, but it is not true. Ceramic tile is a thermal product that absorbs both heat and cold, depending on the room temperature. The tile stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Is Ceramic tile too hard underfoot?

The surface of the tile is naturally harder than carpet, but no harder than vinyl or wood. Also, the surface construction is designed for comfort underfoot.
